What personal information we collect and why
We collect personal information when you use our home-value estimator or otherwise contact us. Specifically:
- Property details you enter: the property address, property type (detached, townhouse, apartment), bedrooms and bathrooms, approximate condition, and your intended timeline for a potential sale. This information is used to generate an estimated market value from public market data.
- Contact information: your name and email address (and phone number, if provided). This is used to send you the estimate and to follow up about your real-estate inquiry.
- Technical information: your browser type, IP address, pages visited, and similar server logs. Used to operate the website, prevent abuse, and diagnose issues.
We do not collect social insurance numbers, financial account details, health information, or any other category of sensitive personal information through this website.
Our purposes for collecting this information
We collect, use, and disclose personal information only for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances:
- To generate an estimated property value from public benchmark data and respond to your inquiry.
- To communicate with you about real-estate services you have requested or expressed interest in.
- To meet obligations under the Real Estate Services Act (BC), the rules of the Real Estate Council of BC and the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver / Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, and RE/MAX brand requirements.
- To operate, secure, and improve the website.
Consent
When you submit the estimator form, you provide express consent for us to use the information you have entered to contact you about your inquiry. Your use of the website itself, including loading pages that use Google Maps for address look-up, constitutes implied consent for the collection and use described in this policy.
You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting our Privacy Officer. Withdrawing consent may limit the services we can provide.
Limiting collection
We ask only for the information we need to produce an estimate and respond to your inquiry. We do not collect personal information indiscriminately.
Third parties we use
We rely on a small set of service providers (“processors”) to operate this website. Each one sees only the data it needs for its role, and we do not sell or rent personal information to anyone, or share it with advertisers or data brokers.
- Cloudflare, Inc. (United States): content delivery network, TLS termination, and bot-protection proxy. All traffic to the site passes through Cloudflare, which sees your IP address, request headers, and the URL path you request. Cloudflare sets a strictly-necessary __cf_bm cookie in your browser to detect automated abuse.
- netcup GmbH (Germany, with a data centre in the United States): web hosting. The site’s WordPress database, files, and server-side request logs are stored on a netcup virtual server.
- Google LLC (United States): Maps JavaScript API and Places API, loaded only after you accept our cookie notice. Google receives the address string you type (for autocomplete) and your IP, and may set cookies such as NID and 1P_JAR. See Google’s privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.
- OpenStreetMap Foundation (United Kingdom): map tiles for the neighbourhood preview, loaded only after you accept our cookie notice. OpenStreetMap tile servers receive your IP address and the tile URLs your browser requests.
- Maileroo Group Pty Ltd (Australia): outbound transactional email. When you submit the estimator form, the notification email to [email protected] is delivered through Maileroo’s SMTP service. Maileroo processes the message content in transit and retains short-term delivery logs.
- Namecheap, Inc. (United States): inbound email forwarding. Messages addressed to [email protected] are forwarded by Namecheap’s email service to our working mailbox.
Data retention and cross-border storage
Several of the providers above are located outside Canada (in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Australia). When personal information leaves Canadian jurisdiction, it may be accessible to foreign courts and law-enforcement bodies under foreign laws. By using the website you acknowledge this possibility.
We retain inquiry information for up to 7 years so we can follow up on your real-estate matter and meet the record-retention rules under the BC Real Estate Services Act. After that, we delete or de-identify it, except where we are required to retain it longer by law or by professional regulation.
Accuracy and correction
We make reasonable efforts to keep the personal information we hold accurate and up to date. You may request a correction by emailing our Privacy Officer.
Safeguards
We protect personal information with safeguards appropriate to its sensitivity, including: HTTPS/TLS for data in transit, access controls on the WordPress administrative area, strong authentication for administrative accounts, and current software updates for the site and its hosting infrastructure.
Openness
This privacy policy is published on our website and kept current. You can always find the most recent version at the Privacy Policy link in our site footer.
Your right to access your information
You have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, how we have used it, and to whom we have disclosed it. To make a request, contact our Privacy Officer. We will respond within 30 days as required by PIPEDA (we may request an extension in limited circumstances permitted by the Act).
Challenging our compliance
If you have a concern about how we handle personal information, please contact our Privacy Officer first. We will investigate and respond. If you remain unsatisfied you can complain to:
- Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia: https://www.oipc.bc.ca/
- Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: https://www.priv.gc.ca/
Cookies and tracking
Our website uses a small number of cookies. WordPress sets standard session cookies only if you log in to the admin area (visitors to the public site normally do not). When the address-autocomplete field on the estimator loads, the Google Maps JavaScript API may set third-party cookies from Google (for example NID, 1P_JAR) for session continuity and fraud prevention.
We follow an opt-out consent model: cookies necessary for the site to function load by default, and you can decline non-essential cookies at any time using the privacy notice at the bottom of the page. You can also control cookies directly through your browser settings.
Children
This website is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of majority in British Columbia (19). If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact our Privacy Officer and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of the page will change when we do. Material changes will be flagged on the site for a reasonable period so you can review them.
